Lalashan National Forest Recreation Area. The Lala Mountain National Forest Recreation Area (hereinafter referred to as this area) is located in the Fuxing District of Taoyuan City, near the Upper Baliing area of the Northern Cross-Island Highway, and the Atayal tribe's Upper Baliing village is named. Lalashan National Forest Recreation Area, located in the northern part of Fuxing District, Taoyuan City, on the upper reaches of the Ba Ling area of the Northern Cross-Island Highway, is home to the Atayal tribe's Ba Ling village, with the name Balung meaning cypress or large fallen tree. The name Lalashan is derived from the Atayal language R'ra, meaning beautiful, admirable, or a place for viewing and watching, which refers to the area being a spot for the tribe to gaze out at prey or defend against external enemies, and also evokes a sense of admiration and wonder. This showcases the area's rich cypress and ecological resources. The global distribution of cypress trees is limited to the cloud forests of North America, Japan, and Taiwan, making Lalashan's cypress forest a precious treasure. Located in the cloud forest, the area's vegetation is classified as a primary coniferous and broadleaf mixed forest, preserving the valuable cypress tree groups that have been nurtured by the natural environment over thousands of years. It is also an important habitat for wild animals and plants such as the Taiwan blue magpie, yellow-throated martin, and Taiwanese serow, and is a representative forest ecosystem in the northern mid-altitude mountainous region, boasting rich natural and cultural characteristics.
