Baxian Mountain was one of the three major lumber mills in the past, having gone through a prosperous and bustling era of forestry, and the Baxian Mountain National Forest Recreation Area was established in 1986. Today, the park utilizes its resources and transforms the lumber mill facilities into a language that recreates past historical memories. It also plans short and easy hiking trails with diverse scenery. Inside the park, visitors can explore the beautiful Shihwen Creek, cherry blossom forest, tung oil forest, and bamboo forest, and climb to the top of Baxian Mountain, the highest peak of the Gukeng Seven Heroes at 2,366 meters above sea level. The name "Baxian Mountain" is a translation from Japanese, as the mountain is approximately 8,000 Japanese feet high, and the name is a homophone for "eight immortals". From 1915 to 1963, the 48-year lumber industry era left behind uniform artificial forests, cable car stations, shrines, and elementary school ruins, telling the story of the lumber industry. The forest railway that once existed was completely dismantled after logging ceased, leaving only old photos in the park for reminiscence. In addition to visiting historical sites, the park has a very rich bird ecology, with species such as the blue-backed tit, rufous-bellied tit, white-eared bulbul, and golden-headed bulbul being common sights. In recent years, a record of the first wild snake incubation in Taiwan was observed, and at night, there is a chance to see wild animals such as the large Indian civet, white-faced civet, ferret-badger, and binturong, as well as the Formosan macaque.
