Strolling along the winding forest trail amidst the neatly planted Japanese black pines and red cedars, one may occasionally encounter fellow hikers with large backpacks and exchange greetings, while the Swinhoe pheasant quietly crosses the path behind and disappears into the underbrush, and the birds such as the fire-breasted flowerpecker on the treetops continue to chirp away. This is a common scene that visitors to the Xiangyang National Forest Recreation Area often encounter. Compared to the famous Jiaming Lake, the Xiangyang National Forest Recreation Area, located at the 154km mark of the Southern Cross-Island Highway at an elevation of 2320 meters, is relatively low-key. The area features beautiful man-made forests and gentle trails, and within the park, one can easily hear the songs of over a dozen species of mountain birds and spot the endangered Swinhoe pheasant, the serow, and the goat roaming about, making it an ideal destination for a leisurely half-day trip to enjoy the cool high-altitude climate, the neat and beautiful man-made forests, and the rich ecology. Note: The Xiangyang National Forest Recreation Area is currently closed, and the reopening time will be announced separately.
