Fuyuan National Forest Recreation Area is traversed by Fuyuan Creek, with a well-connected network of mountain trails, featuring the deepest parts of Longyin Suspension Bridge, Fuyuan Suspension Bridge, and Longyin Waterfall, which are very serene, offering a combination of birdwatching, butterfly watching, forest bathing, and hot springs, providing visitors with a diverse range of recreational experiences. From Hualien City, it takes about an hour to reach Fuyuan National Forest Recreation Area, known as the "Butterfly Valley". The area was once the eastern terminus of the "Guangmen Ancient Trail" during the Qing dynasty and currently has a large area of 40-year-old camphor tree plantations, which are beautiful and pleasant. The primary forest has representative tree species of low-altitude forests, such as nine-twist and monkey joy, with a plethora of epiphytes that give it an Avatar-like beauty. Due to its location in the shallow mountain area of the Central Mountain Range, the park has rich bird resources, making it a famous birdwatching spot in Hualien, including the Hualien County bird, the Formosan magpie, the five-color bird, the yellow-bellied sapphire, the Taiwan blue magpie, the grey-throated mountain thrush, and the occasional appearance of the crested serpent eagle. Additionally, from March to August, it is the best time for butterfly watching, with a variety of butterfly species earning it the reputation as the "Butterfly Valley". The humid and unpolluted environment of the park makes Fuyuan's firefly species diverse, with the black-winged firefly appearing from March to June and the Taiwan mountain window firefly appearing from October to December, making it a popular spot for firefly watching in recent years.
