Located in the Shangci Village's Shangku settlement, the Wu Show-Tsai Residence is the largest ancient house on Lieyu Island, built in the 20th year of the Daoguang Emperor's reign during the Qing dynasty by Wu Jing-Shan, who became wealthy from operating shipping and salt industries in Shangku. The residence is a three-section compound with two wings and a pair of protective dragons. After Wu Yu-Shan, the fifth-generation descendant of the Wu family, passed the imperial examination and became a show-tsai during the late Guangxu Emperor's reign, a study and a school were established in the front courtyard of the residence to provide free education to local children. This move was deeply appreciated by the neighbors, and therefore, the people of Lieyu Township called the Wu residence "Wu Show-Tsai Residence", a name that has been used ever since.
