The original site of the memorial gate had a cannonball-shaped "823 Artillery Battle Memorial Monument", which was built to commemorate the 1958 August 23 Artillery Battle, in which the national army faced over 260,000 rounds of artillery fire from the enemy, stubbornly defended their position, fought bravely, and ultimately won a glorious victory.
