Beizhen Temple. Xuantian Shangdi is popularly known as "Shangdi Gong," also called "Northern Emperor Xuantian Shangdi," or Emperor Xuanwu. Since ancient times in China, it has been customary to associate the "East with the Azure Dragon, the West with the White Tiger,. Since ancient times in China, the "Azure Dragon of the East, White Tiger of the West, Vermilion Bird of the South, and Black Tortoise of the North" have been collectively referred to as the "Four Symbols." As Taiwan is located in the Northern Hemisphere and people traditionally face south when residing, the directions East, West, South, and North are often replaced by Left, Right, Front, and Back. Xuantian Shangdi represents the stars of the North Star. Therefore, temples are generally built on the northern side of towns and cities. The Shangdi Gong enshrined at Beizhen Temple is the guardian deity of the Houpu North Gate area. It was renovated once in 1984 and rebuilt again in 2000 to achieve its current appearance.
