The sanctuary covers an area of approximately 103 hectares, situated in the southeastern corner of the Lanyang Plain. It faces the vast Pacific Ocean to the east and is adjacent to the well-known Beifang'ao Fishing Harbor to the south. Local settlements such as Dakenggu and Yueming New Village are scattered around the area. Originally, this was a winding river, but due to the long-term silting of the river mouth, the water could not flow smoothly out to sea, gradually forming a vast wetland swamp, hence the name 'Wuweigang' (literally 'tail-less harbor').
