Standing before Guanxin Algal Reef, the largest algal reef terrain on Taiwan Island, the ecological masterpiece formed by millennia of flowing time is awe-inspiring, making one deeply aware of human insignificance. Spanning approximately 370 hectares, Guanxin Algal Reef, unlike coral reefs formed by animals, is a 'plant reef' formed by the calcified remains of dead articulated coralline algae accumulating on gravel beds, with an average growth rate of only 1 cm per decade. The algal reefs in Taoyuan once stretched from Dayuan, Guanyin, to Xinwu, but due to coastal industrial development, only about 5 kilometers remain from the original 27 kilometers. To conserve this 4,000-year-old marine treasure, the 'Taoyuan Guanxin Algal Reef Ecosystem Wildlife Habitat' was established in 2014, becoming an open-air classroom for understanding the algal reef environment. The annual 'Cherish Taoyuan Algal Reef Thousand-Person Hike' event also allows the public to actively participate in protecting this coastline.
