The founding abbot, Master Miao Chan, is a legendary figure. Master Miao Chan's courtesy name is Xianyun, and his alias is Woxu. He is from Nanpu Village, Beipu Township, Hsinchu County, and his secular name is Zhang Huannian. In his youth, he studied under the famous master of qin, poetry, calligraphy, and painting, Zhang Caixiang, and specialized in sculpture and architecture. To explore Buddhist principles, he traveled to mainland China and became a disciple of Master Liangda at Houguo Temple in Xinghua, Fujian. He then entered seclusion for three years at Xuefeng Temple to study Buddhist principles deeply. After that, he traveled to famous mountains and ancient temples throughout China for five years, fully comprehending the essence of Buddhism and becoming a master of his generation.
