In 1946, the once influential 'Young Marshal' of Northeast China, Chang Hsueh-liang, came to Taiwan from Chongqing, beginning thirteen years of house arrest in Qingquan, Wufeng. This period witnessed the turbulent currents of modern Chinese history and wrote a quiet yet profound chapter of life. The current residence is a Japanese-style cypress wooden bungalow rebuilt elsewhere after the original structure was completely destroyed by Typhoon Gloria in 1964. The museum houses historical materials and precious photographs donated by Chang Hsueh-liang's nieces, Chang Luer-heng and Chang Luer-zhi, and includes General Chang's manuscripts, writings, and oral histories from Qingquan elders. Every step inside feels like returning to the days when Chang Hsueh-liang and his wife, Zhao Yidi, lived in seclusion amidst the mountains and forests, experiencing the passage of time from turbulent politics to introspective life. The Former Residence of Chang Hsueh-liang is not just a nostalgic attraction, but also a cultural window into modern Chinese history. Here, you can feel the depth of the era and glimpse a moving love story that transcended storms. This tranquil mountain dwelling makes Wufeng an excellent starting point for historical and intellectual journeys.
