Ancestral Temple of the Liu Family in Xinpu, also known as the Liu Clan Ancestral Hall, is located at No. 230, Heping Street, Xinsheng Village, Xinpu Township, Hsinchu County. In the third year of Tongzhi (1864), Liu clan members from the same township and lineage in the Xinpu area jointly funded the construction of the ancestral hall, which was completed in April of the sixth year of Tongzhi (1867). The Xinpu area was originally called Zhushan or Zhuqianpu. After the ban on married immigrants was lifted during the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty, a large number of immigrants from eastern Guangdong began to cultivate this land, with the Liu, Cai, Chen, Pan, Zhu, and Guo families being prominent clans. The Liu clan members who established the Liu Family Ancestral Hall arrived in this area around the beginning of the Qianlong era to begin their cultivation endeavors. The first to advocate for the construction of the ancestral hall were Liu Chaoyuan, the 15th generation descendant of Liu Guxiang, the founding ancestor of Shijing Township, Raoping County, Chaozhou Prefecture, Guangdong Province, and Liu Shihe, the 17th generation descendant. Liu Rongguang of Xinpu Street donated the land, and Liu Songmao and Liu Wanyong of Xinpu Street, Liu Tingzhang of Dahan Keng Village, and Liu Jiawan of Xinqingtian jointly funded the construction, divided into five ranks. Liu Shihe presided over the project. The Ancestral Temple of the Liu Family in Xinpu enshrines the ancestral tablets of Liu Rong, the grandfather of Liu Bang, Emperor Gaozu of Han, the common ancestor of the Liu family, and the ancestral tablets of successive generations of ancestors. Currently, it is composed of several ancestral trusts, including the Liu Rong Gong Trust, Liu Rong Gong Chang Trust, Liu Dingzi Chang Trust, Liu Family Ancestral Hall Trust, and Chuiyu Chang Trust. This type of ancestral organization, formed by kinship and shared hometown ties, is a typical example of early immigrant society and also reflects the early stages of Hakka immigration and settlement.
