Guanxi Zheng Family Shrine. Guanxi is located in the northeast of Hsinchu City, and is an important town in the upper reaches of the Fengshan River. Kuanhsi is located northeast of Hsinchu City, an important town in the upper reaches of the Fengshan River. Before the Han Chinese settled here in the early Qing Dynasty, this area was home to the Pingpu people of the Zhujian community. Around the Jiaqing and Daoguang periods, the Han Chinese generally moved upstream along the Fengshan River from the Hsinchu Plain to cultivate the land. Kuanhsi was a vital thoroughfare to and from the interior mountains, so a defensive barrier was established. The Kuanhsi street area includes the Old Street and the New Street. The Old Street was first built in the 17th year of Jiaqing (1812), and the New Street, also known as Xiancaipeng, was established in the 2nd year of Daoguang (1822). The Zheng family of Kuanhsi came to Taiwan from Raoping, Guangdong, to cultivate the land. The sixth-generation ancestor, Zheng Qingya, first came to Taiwan in his early twenties and settled near Qiaotou, under Jianshan in Yingge, Taipei. The ninth-generation ancestor, Zheng Chengmao, moved to Toucheng, Lanyang, in the late Qianlong period, where he operated a goldsmith shop and cultivated Erjie, Sanjie, and Sijie, accumulating some wealth. Later, fearing involvement in the Hokkien-Cantonese conflicts, he moved to Xiancaiweng in Zhubei Erbao, Tamsui Hall, in the 14th year of Daoguang (1834), near what is now Kuanhsi Beimenkou, to engage in cultivation. In addition to purchasing houses and land, the Zheng Family's Xingyang Ancestral Temple was also built around this time. Legend has it that at the beginning of its construction, a geomancer suggested adopting a "Chou Mountain facing Gen" orientation, which is slightly north-leaning, to bring prosperity. However, the family decided to adopt a "Gen Mountain facing Chou" orientation, which is northeast-facing southwest, to promote academic success, demonstrating the Zheng family's emphasis on imperial examinations and the cultivation of their descendants.
