The Deng family, originally from Raoping, Guangdong, had their 12th-generation ancestor, Deng Shiquan, travel across the sea to Taiwan, initially settling in Xinzhuang, Taipei. In the late 18th century, due to family development, they purchased land in Dahan Keng, Hsinchu. However, frequent conflicts between Fujian and Guangdong immigrants during the Qing Dynasty's Daoguang era affected the Hakka Deng family, leading the 14th-generation ancestor to move his entire family to Dahan Keng. Together with other settlers, they jointly dug the 'Laogengliao Canal,' built residences, and gradually developed into a settlement. The Deng family's 'Nanyangtang,' commonly referred to as 'Lao Wu' (Old House) by clan members, is believed to have been initially built during the Qing Dynasty's Daoguang era. The current structure was renovated in 1906 by Liu Jialai, a craftsman from Wufengpu, Xinpu. Nanyangtang Deng House is a typical Hakka 'Huofang' (communal housing) building, with the existing layout being 'one hall and three horizontal rooms.' It features a courtyard in front and a well and 'hualun' (earthen platform) in the back, fully demonstrating the living functions of a traditional Hakka 'Sanheyuan' (three-section house). The main hall serves as the public hall, the left and right horizontal rooms are for clan members' residences, and the outer horizontal rooms are for agricultural and livestock purposes, such as raising cattle and pigs. All building materials are sourced locally; the black tiles, adobe bricks, mortared bricks, and wooden trusses reflect the Hakka people's practical and down-to-earth architectural style of using local resources.
