The Deng family, originally from Raoping, Guangdong, had their 12th-generation ancestor, Deng Shiquan, travel across the sea to Taiwan, initially settling in Xinzhuang, Taipei. At the end of the 18th century, due to family development, they purchased land and property in Dahan Pit, Hsinchu. However, frequent conflicts between Fujian and Guangdong immigrants during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty affected the Hakka Deng family, leading their 14th-generation ancestor to move his entire family to Dahan Pit. Together with other settlers, they jointly dug the "Laogengliao Canal," built residences, and gradually developed into a settlement. The Deng family's "Nanyang Hall," commonly referred to as the "Old House" by clan members, is believed to have been initially built during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty. The current structure was renovated in the 39th year of the Meiji era (1906) by Liu Jialai, a craftsman from Wufengpu, Xinpu. Nanyang Hall Deng House is a typical Hakka "huofang" (communal housing) building, with its current layout being "one hall and three transverse rooms." It has a threshing ground in front and a well and "huitai" (earthen platform for ancestral worship) in the back, fully demonstrating the living functions of a traditional Hakka "sanheyuan" (three-section compound). The main hall serves as the public hall, the left and right transverse rooms are for clan members' residences, and the outer transverse rooms are for agricultural and livestock purposes, such as raising cattle and pigs. All building materials are sourced locally. Black tiles, adobe bricks, dressed bricks, and wooden trusses reflect the Hakka architectural style of using local materials, emphasizing simplicity and practicality.
