Liu Family Ancestral House. The Liu Residence in Shangfangliao, Xinpu, located at No. 238, Shangliao Village, Xinpu Township, Hsinchu County, was built in the 46th year of the Qianlong reign (1781) and was designated a Grade III historic site in the Taiwan-Fujian region in the 74th year of the Republic of China (1985). In the 20th year of the Qianlong reign (1755), Madam Zhan, wife of the 11th generation ancestor Liu Ruige, along with her three sons Liu Yanzhuan, Liu Yanjiao, and Liu Yanying, crossed the sea from Yangkang Township, Raoping County, Guangdong Province, to Taiwan, and temporarily resided in the Yanshuigang area (present-day Xiangshan District, Hsinchu City). The eldest son, Liu Yanzhuan, courtesy name Xuewu, established his business in Fangliao and built an ancestral hall in the siheyuan (courtyard house) style, mimicking their original hometown. As the house has a front and back hall, it is also known as the "Shuangtangwu" (Double Hall House). At that time, the construction only used rammed earth walls and thatched roofs, with only the front and back courtyards being more elaborate. In the 8th year of the Taisho era (1919), the Liu Residence underwent renovations, overseen by Liu Fuqing, a descendant of the Liu family and a renowned craftsman. Three rows of side houses were added to the left and right, taking ten years to complete, resulting in the current floor plan commonly known as "Er Tang Liu Heng Shi" (Two Halls and Six Side Houses), comprising a total of ninety-nine rooms and an area of approximately 30,000 square meters. Compared to the basic "Yi Tang Er Heng Shi" (One Hall and Two Side Houses) floor plan typical of the Xinpu area, its scale demonstrates the prosperity and large population of the Liu family.
