Zhonggang Ciyu Temple — Ciyu Temple enshrines Mazu, commonly known as Zhonggang Mazu. Together with Beigang Chaotian Temple and Donggang Donglong Temple, it is known as one of Taiwan's Three Mazu Temples. Stone carvings are the main decoration of Ciyu Temple, including the main entrance and exterior decorations, eaves, and pillars. The pair of bluestone lions at the front hall's central gate are the earliest known exquisite stone carvings in the temple. The coiled dragon stone pillars in the front hall are the only pair of early dragon pillars remaining in Ciyu Temple. The carvings in the center of the pillars are very slender, which is a characteristic of the temple. Besides the "Bombing Handan" during the Lantern Festival, another most distinctive folk activity of Ciyu Temple is "Washing the Port and Sacrificing to the River." "Washing the Port and Sacrificing to the River" is the only summer Mazu procession in the country. On Dragon Boat Festival, Mazu leads four other deities on a tour of Zhonggang, performing various rituals at the river mouth. After the rituals, everyone must quietly leave with their backs to the river mouth without making a sound, while the deities' statues must retreat facing the river mouth, symbolizing the purification of the land and the protection of all people. "Bombing Handan" is a ritual on the evening of the Lantern Festival, where a sedan chair carrying the golden statue of a deity is escorted by four sedan bearers dressed in bare chests, money hats, shorts, and cloth shoes, holding brooms, along the route.
