Sanyi is renowned for its thriving woodcarving industry, with numerous woodcarving factories. Shanbanqiao's predecessor was a woodcarving studio. The owners, a husband and wife, originally focused on carving flat woodcarvings, screens, tables, chairs, tea trays, and other practical art pieces. However, with the changing socio-economic structure, the woodcarving industry gradually declined, prompting the owners to reconsider the direction of their studio. Initially, they transformed the studio into a farm primarily offering woodcarving instruction. Due to their strong interest in Peking Opera facial masks, they used these masks as teaching materials to instruct beginners in basic carving techniques. However, using sharp carving knives posed a danger to untrained beginners. Therefore, they later developed facial mask painting activities, and Shanbanqiao gradually evolved into a place centered around facial mask art, transforming into a venue suitable for public and parent-child impromptu painting. The cultural center is divided into several areas, including a historical and cultural area introducing the local history and culture of Sanyi, a woodcarving facial mask exhibition area, and a wood experience area where visitors can learn about wood through hands-on activities.
