The upper half of the tunnel lining's arch is constructed with red bricks, while the lower half of the side walls continues to use cement bricks. Further inside, at the southern entrance of Tunnel No. 1, the small, scattered pits on the walls resemble machine gun fire or bomb fragments. Local elders assert that these are historical traces left by Allied aircraft during the Pacific War in the late stages of World War II, as they pursued trains over Taiwan. The weathered Chihsing Old Tunnel bears witness to Taiwan's arduous development and railway history, and records the trajectory of change in the Zhunan area. Chihsing Tunnel Quick Facts: 1. Built in 1928 (Republic of China Year 17) due to the rerouting between Xiangshan and Zhunan. A Chihsing signal station was established at the southern end of Tunnel No. 2 to manage train crossings. 2.
