The original trail started from Luhou in Xinlong Village, Tongluo Township, followed the upper reaches of the Xinjilong River, crossed Shifending, passed through Nanhu Creek and Caodong, and then reached Zhugaowu and Dahu, or descended along Nanhu Creek to the Nanhu area. Because Shifending is the lowest saddle of the Guandao Mountain Range, the ancient trail became a vital road connecting Tongluo and Sanyi to Dahu. Today, it has been completely replaced by a concrete road. Shifending is located on a small hill on the Guandao Mountain ridge. It was named "Shifending" (meaning "ten portions") because early settlers extracted camphor here, setting up ten camphor kilns. The eastern section of the Shifending Ancient Trail belongs to Nanhu Creek, leading to Dahu or Nanhu. The Shifending Ancient Trail became the most important ancient trail for developing the Dahu area. After settlement in the 1870s, it gradually became a cross-ridge route from the Guandao Mountain Range into Dahu. During the pioneering period in Dahu Township, the salt and postal routes entered the mountains from Tongluo along the Laojilong River, reaching the Xinjilong area. This was an important route for Hakka settlers, preserving traditional Hakka farmhouses and mountain lifestyles.
