He was a recipient of the National Endowment for Arts' Living National Treasure award. In 1973, he established the "Shan Di Men Sculpture Studio." Sharp knives and heavy wooden mallets intertwined to bring out the primal life from the wood. Every stroke by Chen Jiong-hui's hand revealed the charm of traditional indigenous art. The stone carvings at the entrance of Xin Diao Ju fully express a simple, wild beauty. The walls built with large stones forming two hundred-pace snakes also showcase the essence of primitive art. The stone pillars on the right side inside the main entrance, the primitive pavilion on the left, and the walls covered with piled-up primitive wooden mortars are among the garden landscaping elements that add an ancient feel to Xin Diao Ju. The interior serves as a display space for the works of Chen Jiong-hui and his apprentices. His works are deeply influenced by Paiwan and Rukai cultures, primarily featuring humans, snakes, deer, and pigs as creative subjects. His carving methods and artistic forms are unique, emphasizing artistic qualities over practical purposes, making it a place worth exploring.
