Xiangtian Lake. Located in Donghe Village, Nanzhuang Township, Miaoli County, it currently has over twenty households with a population of about 200 people and is the largest settlement of the Saisiyat people. Legend has it that hundreds of years ago, this was originally a lake. The ancients named it Xiangtian Lake (Looking Towards Heaven Lake), also known as Yangtian Lake (Looking Up at Heaven Lake), because they saw the lake looking up at the sky. Later, due to erosion by a tributary of the Datong River, the lake was breached, and the lake water drained, leaving a fertile lakebed that became a mountain basin. The indigenous people who moved here cultivated it. Xiangtian Lake is 738 meters above sea level. It borders Luchang to the southeast across the Guangtiangaoshan mountain range, connects to Penglai Village to the southwest, and lies below the mountains of Nanjiang Village and Donghe Village to the northwest. Guangtiangaoshan is a branch of the Jiari Mountain Range. The east side is cut and eroded by the Datong River, with steep cliffs; the west side has gentle slopes and a wider mountain range. Xiangtian Lake is located on the western mountainside. The basin is covered with terraced fields, surrounded by fir, miscellaneous wood, and Kweichow bamboo forests, full of greenery. Due to its high altitude, it is often shrouded in mist in winter and spring, with white clouds drifting like a fairyland. The 'Little People Festival' (Pas-ta'ai), held every two years with a major festival every ten years, is of profound historical significance and possesses an ancient and mysterious aura, making it the most important festival for the Saisiyat people. The Little People Festival is held around the 15th day of the tenth lunar month every other year, lasting for 4 days and 3 nights. The Saisiyat people hope that visitors will come to the mountain with reverence and respect for indigenous culture.
