In a quiet corner of Shitan Valley in Miaoli, terraced rice paddies were transformed into mulberry plantations in the late 1970s due to government promotion, leading to the raising of silkworms. This marked the beginning of professional sericulture, evolving from cocoon production to flat cocoon production. However, in the 1990s, a shift in government agricultural policy led to the abolition of the sericulture industry, and there was no longer a market for silk. Faced with a vast green mulberry orchard and an uncertain future, the farm owner insisted on preserving this precious historical industry in Taiwan, allowing Taiwanese children to see adorable silkworms. This led to the establishment of the "Quanming Ecological Education Sericulture Farm." In the pesticide-free ecological mulberry orchard, thousands of silkworms are raised. Visitors can observe silkworms eating mulberry leaves, growing, spinning silk, pupating, and emerging as moths. The courtyard is home to various cute insects and small animals, and fireflies accompany visitors at night. Lucky visitors might even spot large Atlas moths! With over 20 years of sericulture experience, Quanming is currently Taiwan's only professional silkworm breeding farm and a designated demonstration and teaching site by the Miaoli County Government. From basic mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing to allowing visitors to participate in the handmade flat silk quilt production process, the farm operates with professional standards.
