Tai'an Hot Springs Area. The renowned Tai'an Hot Springs are located in the Wenshui River Valley between Henglong Mountain, Niaozui Mountain, and Huzishan. The hot spring source, emerging from the mountain cliffs by the Niaozui River, was accidentally discovered in 1908 by the Atayal people while chasing prey. During the Japanese colonial era, in 1910, the Japanese established the "Police Sanatorium" here, exclusively for Japanese police officers and their families. Due to the peninsula-like terrain, it was named "Kamishima Onsen." After the retrocession, it was renamed "Tai'an Guesthouse" and continued to be managed by the local police bureau. Before 1963, former provincial chairman Huang Jie visited and inspected the area. He observed a small islet in the Wenshui River with the imposing backdrop of Hushan Mountain and renamed it "Hushan Hot Springs." In 1978, then-Premier Chiang Ching-kuo visited and, taking the meaning of "hoping for national peace and prosperity," officially named it "Tai'an Hot Springs." Tai'an Hot Springs has an abundant and perennial water source. Its characteristics include milky white, slightly transparent, weakly alkaline carbonated hot springs with an average water temperature of around 47 degrees Celsius. It lacks the pungent smell of sulfur springs, and bathing in it leaves the skin feeling particularly smooth and refreshing, earning it the nickname "Beauty Soup."
