Mingfeng Ancient Trail. The Mingfeng Ancient Trail, spanning Touwu and Shitan, was originally a mountain path used by the Saisiyat people for hunting. Later, when Huang Nanqiu led Cantonese settlers to cultivate Miaoli, the Saisiyat people moved deeper into the mountains, and the ancient trail became an important route for residents of Mingfeng Village in Touwu Township and Xindian Village in Shitan Township to transport goods. The Mingfeng Ancient Trail, spanning Touwu and Shitan, was originally a mountain path used by the Saisiyat people for hunting. The trail became overgrown with weeds after the opening of Provincial Highway 22, but thanks to the efforts of local residents, it is now a popular spot for hiking. You can enter the Mingfeng Ancient Trail from either the Yimin Temple in Shitan Township or the Yundong Temple in Touwu Township. Starting from Yundong Temple involves more downhill sections than starting from Yimin Temple. If you choose Yimin Temple in Shitan Township as your starting point, it is recommended to visit the temple first. It not only commemorates the pioneers who sacrificed their lives during the Qing Tongzhi era and enshrines Huang Nanqiu, the "Huang Man Tou Jia" (a title of respect for early settlers), but also preserves historical materials from the pioneering period. From behind Yimin Temple, after crossing the red-roped Xindian Stream suspension bridge, you will see the Mingfeng Ancient Trail marker. Ascend the stone steps under the dense canopy of leaves, passing through a mixed forest of camphor trees, bamboo groves, acacia trees, and tung trees. During April and May, when the tung blossoms bloom, the white petals falling from the branches add a touch of romance, while butterflies flutter and birdsong fills the air, making you forget the summer heat.
