Due to Shanjiao Village's location at the intersection of the mountains and the sea, and its position as the geographical center of Yuanli Township, it attracted a large population over thirty years ago. Small and medium-sized factories and shops flourished, developing into a bustling town. Furthermore, its proximity to Huoyan Mountain provided high-quality soil suitable for brick and tile production, leading to a glorious history of brick and tile kilns in the area. The skillful hands of local women also created a stage for the rush weaving industry. However, with the changing times, the once prosperous brick and tile kiln industry and rush weaving are no longer what they used to be. Local residents worried that population outflow would lead to a bottleneck in local development. Therefore, in 2004, they voluntarily established the "Miaoli County Yuanli Township Shanjiao Community Development Association" and identified the community's unique characteristics. They integrated these features to redevelop special industries such as rush weaving, brick carving art, and rice. Now, under the diligent management of the association, Shanjiao Community has found a new path. In addition to holding irregular DIY workshops and related exhibitions, it also provides guided tours of cultural attractions, becoming a cultural community that showcases local characteristics.
