Located in Nanzhuang Township, Miaoli County, "Osmanthus Alley" is a small alley on the Nanzhuang Old Street, rich in history and infused with Hakka culture. Nanzhuang has three main streets, and Osmanthus Alley is a narrow lane nestled between two of them. Though it doesn't smell of osmanthus, it's named Osmanthus Alley. The alley, about two meters wide, is paved with vermilion bricks. In the early days, a group of community development workers and women established the "Osmanthus Alley Workshop" to promote local culture, which led to the alley's naming. The alley is lined with many small shops selling various Nanzhuang snacks, as well as the "washing pits" where women used to do laundry, an old post office from the Japanese colonial era, and a traditional old shop selling beautiful kimonos. Visit Nanzhuang's Osmanthus Alley on a cool holiday, and you're guaranteed to be pleasantly surprised.
