Shitoushan Trail. Shitoushan is located at the border of Nanzhuang Township, Miaoli County, and Emei Township, Hsinchu County. The entire mountain is covered in lush green peaks and dotted with strange rock formations, exuding a spiritual aura that transcends the mundane. There are currently eleven temples on the mountain, most of which are built into natural caves, nestled among the green mountains and trees. The temples are arranged harmoniously, creating an ethereal atmosphere, and it is a famous sacred site in Taiwan for promoting Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Shitoushan is characterized by towering ancient trees that form a dense canopy, with temples scattered throughout, exuding a serene and tranquil ambiance. Spending a leisurely half-day or a short vacation here, engaging in Buddhist worship and meditation amidst the morning bells and evening drums, washes away all worldly dust and worries, making it a solemn and peaceful tourist destination. Shitoushan is one of the twelve scenic spots in Taiwan, situated within the boundaries of Nanzhuang and Emei townships. The southern part of the watershed belongs to Nanzhuang Township, Miaoli County, while the northern part belongs to Emei Township, Hsinchu County. The southern side features steep cliffs and faces Xiangbishan across the Sanwan River; the northern side has undulating hills that wind between Tengping Village and Liuliao, resembling a crouching lion. During the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty, Tamsui Magistrate Li Shenyi named it 'Shitoushan' due to its shape. Shitoushan has an altitude of 496 meters and is a standard hogback ridge. The summit is often shrouded in mist and clouds, with the mountainside resembling a coiling dragon; bamboo and miscellaneous trees grow among the rocks. Stone steps wind through the dense, shaded forest, making it difficult to see the sky, and it remains cool even in summer. The cliffs on the mountainside are steep, reaching about several dozen ren in height.
