Huaijhong Shrine. Main deity: Eighteen Righteous People. Historical background: Huaijhong Shrine, a county-designated historic site, was founded during the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty. Its origin dates back to the spring of 1732, the tenth year of Emperor Yongzheng's reign, when the Pingpu people of Dajiaxi Dulin Wu gathered forces to resist the Qing government and besieged the county seat. At that time, Lu Ruilin, the commander-in-chief of Taiwan's garrison, led troops to quell the rebellion. Zhang Hongzhang, the Tongzhi (magistrate) of Danshui, was patrolling the villages with local volunteers when he was mistakenly attacked by arrows from what he suspected were A-shu people. At that time, many villages near A-shu were cultivated by Hakka immigrants. Upon hearing that their superior was surrounded, they rallied the villagers to drive back the Pingpu people from various communities. Hongzhang was thus able to escape, and the rebellion was quelled after four months.
