The Wen Kai Academy, the Wumiao Temple, and the Wenchang Shrine are three adjacent buildings in a row. In the 4th year of Daoguang (1824), Deng Chuan'an, the Deputy Governor of Lukang's Coastal Defense, initiated the construction of the academy. Merchants and gentry from the Quan-Xia eight guilds donated funds in response, and the academy was completed in the 7th year of Daoguang (1827). It was named "Wen Kai Academy" to commemorate Shen Guangwen, a Confucian scholar from the late Ming Dynasty, whose courtesy name was "Wen Kai".
