Nanjing Temple, Lugang. Nanjing Temple, according to the 'Changhua County Gazetteer', was built in the 37th year of the Qianlong reign (1772 AD). It was donated and built by merchants from Nanjing, Zhangzhou Prefecture, Fujian. Located to the right of Wangye Temple, it enshrines Lord Guan. (Stele preserved in Nanjing Temple) Merchants from Nanjing invited the ancestral temple's statue of Lord Guan to Taiwan and initially built a temple by the Lugang waterfront (the current temple site, which was a mooring place for boats and rafts at the time). It was originally a center of worship exclusively for immigrants from Zhangzhou. After the people of Zhangzhou moved inland to develop, it has now become a temple dedicated to Lord Guan for people of all ethnic groups. Nanjing Temple primarily enshrines Lord Guan (referred to in the temple as the Great Demon Subduer). Accompanying deities include Prince Guan Ping and General Zhou Cang as the left and right protectors. It also enshrines the God of Literature (Wenqu Star Lord), Marshal Xie Fu, Lord Ma, Red Hare (the horse that travels a thousand miles a day), the 81-jin Qinglong Yanyuedao (Green Dragon Crescent Blade), and various generals. Lord Guan's given name was Yu, courtesy name Yunchang, original courtesy name Changsheng, a native of Xie County, Hedong Prefecture during the Three Kingdoms period. His deeds of 'loyalty, filial piety, integrity, and righteousness' from his oath of brotherhood with Liu and Zhang in the peach garden are admired for all generations. Lord Guan is one of the Five Wenchang (Gods of Literature). Confucianism reveres him as Emperor Wenheng. Historical records state: 'One person from Shandong wrote the Spring and Autumn Annals (Confucius); one person from Shanxi reads the Spring and Autumn Annals (Lord Guan).' Hence, he is known as Master Guan and Master of Shanxi. Revered as a secondary sage and secondary virtuous one, coupled with his extraordinary martial arts skills and noble integrity, he is accomplished in both civil and military arts.
