Old mountain cannons could not withstand the surging enemy. Bagua Mountain, formerly known as Dingjun Mountain, was completed in the 20th year of Jiaqing's reign. A brick fort was built on the mountain, named Dingjun Mountain Fort, which housed four artillery platforms and one city tower. In the first year of Tongzhi (1862), Dai Chaochun led the Bagua Association in an uprising. Within days, Bagua Mountain was occupied, and the Dingjun Fort's artillery platforms were controlled and used to bombard Changhua City. Changhua City was subsequently captured two days later.
