His father, Shi Kun-Yu (born 1919), was a master carpenter specializing in traditional temple architecture. His ancestral home is Quanzhou, Fujian. Shi Zhen-Yang's initial training in wood carving came from his father, Shi Kun-Yu. He often accompanied his father to construction sites of temples in various locations during his childhood. Through this immersive experience, he gradually developed an interest in wood carving. Around the age of 18 (1963), he officially began working in carpentry. While some projects were still contracted by his father, Shi Kun-Yu would often handle the design while Shi Zhen-Yang was responsible for the actual craftsmanship until the age of 34 (1979), when he began to independently contract projects.
