Born in Lugang, a town renowned for its master sculptors, he apprenticed under wood sculptor Wang Chin-yi at the age of 14, establishing a solid foundation in traditional wood carving. The wood carving techniques in Lugang are mainly inherited from the Quanzhou school of mainland China, known for its delicate style, with lifelike depictions of flowers, birds, insects, fish, and historical figures. Huang Ma-ching's wood carving creations focus more on the Taiwanese natural ecological environment. For example, wetlands, the horseshoe crabs of Kinmen, and the black-faced spoonbills of the Cigu estuary. He pours his emotions into each piece of wood, and through each carving stroke, he awakens the public to the fact that "human selfish behavior has destroyed the habitats of coexisting species." In order to preserve these beautiful figures, he strives to carve their likenesses, thereby seeking beautiful memories of this land.
