Changhua Railway Hospital, formerly Gaobin Pavilion, is located less than 300 meters from Changhua Railway Station on Chenling Road, a famous food street in Changhua, surrounded by well-known Changhua delicacies such as ba-wan (meatballs), cat-mouse noodles, and plain noodles. Its architecture, unlike traditional designs that emphasize symmetrical balance, resembles a large ship with a bridge-like structure on the left side of the roof, small round windows and long rectangular windows on the walls like portholes, and simple lines. It is considered quite avant-garde for its time in the Japanese colonial era and is one of the representative buildings of Taiwanese modernist architecture in terms of architectural aesthetics. It was designated as a county-designated historic site in 2011. During the Japanese colonial period, Gaobin Pavilion was the largest restaurant in central Taiwan, where geisha and Nakasi (Japanese-style folk music performances) flourished. Together with the surrounding hotels and taverns centered around Changhua Railway Station, it formed a bustling entertainment area, marking the beginning of modern leisure life in Taiwan. Many literati and intellectuals gathered here for socializing and discussing current affairs, including Lai Ho, the father of Taiwanese new literature, and Du Tsung-ming, the father of Taiwanese medicine. After World War II, the Taiwan Railways Administration acquired Gaobin Pavilion to serve as a railway hospital. This building, spanning across time, holds profound significance in Taiwan's cultural and railway history, showcasing the vibrant historical splendor of Changhua City and serving as a living imprint of the people of Changhua. The first-floor walls are adorned with light blue square tiles.
