According to statistics, the Qing government dispatched a total of 600,000 troops, while Japan sent 240,000 soldiers. The two countries engaged in world-shaking land and naval battles on the banks of the Yalu River and in the Yellow Sea of China. Due to the outdated equipment and insufficient training of the Qing army, the proud Beiyang Fleet and thirty-five army battalions were defeated and suffered heavy casualties from the beginning of the engagement, which is historically known as the "First Sino-Japanese War".
