Li Wan-ju's Former Residence (Li Wan-ju Spiritual Enlightenment Hall). Mr. Li Wan-ju, courtesy name Mengnan, was born in Wubei Village, Kouhu Township, Yunlin County on July 22, 1901. He came from a poor family in his youth, and his father passed away early. He relied on self-study. He laid the foundation for his classical Chinese studies through self-study and arduous learning. In 1924, with the support of relatives, friends, and villagers, he went to Shanghai to study. In 1926, he went to France to study and obtained a degree from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Paris in 1932. Mr. Li Wan-ju was a pioneer and enlightener of Taiwan's democratic movement. He advocated for the lifting of the ban on political parties and newspapers, promoted judicial reform, and tirelessly worked for democratic political reform. His life was dedicated to pursuing Taiwan's democracy and freedom, and he actively participated in local politics. His spirit of striving for press freedom and political human rights is truly admirable. To further implement party politics and promote Taiwan's democracy and freedom, he collaborated with Lei Zhen and others in 1950 to plan the formation of the China Democratic Party. Although it ultimately failed under the stern and high-pressure rule of the authorities, his demeanor is worthy of admiration by future generations. He passed away in 1966 at the age of 66 due to complications from diabetes. Currently, Mr. Li Wan-ju's former residence, located next to Tiaotian Temple in Wubei Village, Kouhu Township, Yunlin County, has been renovated and transformed into the Li Wan-ju Spiritual Enlightenment Hall through the active efforts of local people, becoming an important cultural attraction in Kouhu Township.
