As Taiwan enters an industrial society, mechanized plows and iron bull carts for transportation have gradually replaced draft cattle. The social value of cattle has greatly diminished, and the importance of cattle markets and cattle traders has also relatively weakened. Beigang Cattle Market is one of the only two remaining cattle markets in Taiwan, located on the banks of the Beigang River, west of Beigang Bridge. It opens early in the morning on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th days of each ten-day period (lunar calendar) and closes at noon. In the past, the highest transaction volume once reached a thousand head. Although there are few cattle transactions nowadays, it remains a popular large market for old farmers and tourists in the Yunlin-Chiayi Plain, selling daily necessities, snacks, cultural items, and used electrical tools.
