Gukeng is widely known as a major coffee hub in Taiwan, but few are aware that Taiwanese coffee once gained international acclaim. During the Japanese colonial era, the Japanese initially identified areas along the Tropic of Cancer, such as Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan, as the most suitable for coffee cultivation. They introduced coffee seeds from Brazil and established agricultural institutions in Chiayi and Hengchun to actively cultivate them. They selected areas like Ruishui, Taitung, Kaohsiung, Gukeng, and Nantou for trial planting, and discovered that coffee produced in Gukeng was of the highest quality. The Japanese company "Tōnan Sangyo Kabushiki Kaisha" began extensively planting Arabica coffee in the areas of Hebaoshan, Huashan, and Shiziguan in Yunlin. At its peak, the cultivation area reached over 300 hectares. Due to the superior quality of Gukeng coffee, it became a tribute from the Governor-General of Taiwan to the Emperor of Japan, and was then known as imperial coffee.
