Ba Xian Shan was originally a desolate mountain forest. When Master Guan Miao (the founding abbot of Bao Lin Zen Temple) was on a pilgrimage from north to south, bowing every three steps, he passed by Xiangjiao Mountain in Dali, Chiayi. It is said that a Bodhisattva appeared with spiritual signs, and believers then pointed the way, guiding the master to the current location, where a thatched hut was first built in the early years of the Republic of China (1960 AD). After his arduous efforts, with the assistance of Master Du Miao, and the enthusiastic help of local villagers, who contributed money and effort, a magnificent and spectacular Bao Lin Zen Temple was finally built in the wilderness.
