Inside, a large black water buffalo is enshrined, accompanied by a cowherd holding a whip. Legend has it that when Koxinga first came to Taiwan to cultivate the land, he brought eight water buffaloes to help with the farming. However, reclaiming wasteland was very difficult, and with more fields than buffaloes, these animals eventually died from overwork. Later, the early settlers built a Water Buffalo Temple to commemorate the buffaloes and to remind future generations of the hardships faced by the pioneers. To this day, General Ox Temple remains a popular place of worship, with visitors coming all year round. Fresh fodder, flowers, fruits, sugarcane, and a bucket of clean water are always offered in the stone trough in front of the buffalo, making it the most distinctive feature of the community.
