Checheng Cultural Park (Suantou Sugar Refinery). Suantou Sugar Refinery, built in 1906, was once the third-largest sugar refinery in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial era. Due to the severe damage to its sugar-making equipment caused by flooding from Typhoon Nari in 2001, sugar production ceased, and it gradually transformed into a leisure industry – a tourist sugar refinery. Suantou Sugar Refinery, combined with the unique narrow-gauge railway of Taiwan Sugar Corporation, developed into the 'Checheng Cultural Park'. The century-old sugar-making factory within the park is its greatest feature. Although the machinery has stopped operating, the management has planned a tour route showcasing exhibits such as sugarcane boards and molasses, allowing visitors to clearly understand the sugar-making process with explanations from guides. The Suantou Sugar Refinery building inside is an old wooden structure where you can take a ride on the narrow-gauge railway. The train departs from the station towards Taibao and Nanzing, with guides on board explaining the rural scenery along the way, including the diminishing sugarcane fields. The park also features ancient buildings to admire, allowing you to deeply feel the progress of life. By the end of 2004, a new attraction, the Ecological Park, was completed, also serving the function of outdoor education. The sugar refinery offers many unique and authentic ice cream flavors worth trying, such as Suantou Red Bean Popsicle, Checheng Red Bean Icy, Job's Tears, and Plum Popsicle, among other special flavors that will leave you with endless memories!
