Among them, the chessboard-style three-courtyard house settlement in Dexing Village, Puzi City, is the most distinctive. Dexing Village, also known as Xin Jizhuang, features three-courtyard houses that are all built facing north and south. These traditional houses with red brick and tiles were not initially valued over time. As the times changed and high-rise buildings sprang up all around, these chessboard-style three-courtyard houses became sandwiched in between, appearing particularly conflicting and out of place. Later, the elder residents of Dexing Community had a flash of inspiration and decided to reorganize the alley environment, starting to plant flowers and grass to beautify the facades. Therefore, Dexing Village can be considered the earliest community in Chiayi County to integrate alley planning and renovation projects. All villagers worked together, young and old, to preserve and beautify the three east-west and four north-south alleys in the village, as well as 112 traditional five-bay three-courtyard houses. To this day, the chessboard-style three-courtyard house settlement, which retains its original appearance, has transformed into the village's treasure, full of rich humanistic charm. Every year, it attracts countless tourists, students from architecture-related departments, community groups, and cultural and historical researchers who come to explore.
