Ding-Tu-Gou Butterfly Village. Located at the border of Shuishang Township and Taibao City in Chiayi County, Tu-Gou Village is composed of Ding-Tu-Gou and Xia-Tu-Gou settlements. It is a typical rural village experiencing population outflow, with only the elderly and children remaining. The county government once intended to establish a landfill here, which triggered strong protests from villagers and awakened their environmental awareness. In recent years, with the government's strong promotion of community building and the awakening of local residents, Ding-Tu-Gou Village began its community building efforts in 1998. They reorganized the village environment, cleaned up the ditches, and planted cattails, transforming the originally dirty, smelly, and overgrown drainage ditches into clear streams with ecological traces. They also planted milkweed and lantana to beautify the environment. Unexpectedly, monarch butterflies appeared. Since milkweed is also known as the butterfly tree, its flowers secrete sweet nectar that provides food for butterflies, thus attracting them to Ding-Tu-Gou. The villagers then decided to plant large quantities of milkweed to restore the butterfly population. With media coverage, the beautiful name "Butterfly Village" spread rapidly. 1999 was the peak year for butterflies, and events such as "Butterflies Come Home" and "Rapeseed Festival" were successively held, also driving a trend of community observation. More than two hundred communities visited, successfully establishing the reputation of Ding-Tu-Gou Butterfly Village. However, in recent years, the butterflies in Butterfly Village are no longer flying due to parasitic wasp infestations.
