Due to the climate and soil in the Chiayi region being highly suitable for sugarcane cultivation, Nanjing Sugar Factory, one of the three major sugar factories at the time, was established in Shuishang Township, Chiayi County. Built in the 41st year of the Meiji era by Toyo Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd., it housed a sugar mill capable of processing 3,200 tons of sugarcane daily and producing 20,000 tons of premium sugar annually. With the booming sugar industry, Shuishang once prospered, but unfortunately, its glory faded with the decline of the sugar industry. As sugar production lost market competitiveness, Nanjing Sugar Factory actively transformed its operations, now pursuing a diversified development strategy. In addition to the original businesses of "sugarcane processing" and "pig farming," which have moved towards mechanized cultivation and professional management, the factory has developed several new ventures. Among these, the cultivation of Phalaenopsis orchids has established an excellent international reputation. The sugar factory complex has been planned with a modern leisure market selling Taiwan Sugar Corporation products. The factory's popsicles, with their diverse flavors, are delicious and affordable, often attracting many tourists, making the market bustling. Adjacent to the market, there are also flower exhibition and sales areas, and a children's recreational area, offering visitors a variety of choices. The sugar factory leisure plaza also features exhibits of old locomotives, retired tanks, and fighter jets, as well as barbecue areas for public recreation, and a childhood tunnel nearby.
