Dengyun Academy Site. Dengyun Academy was the only one of the four academies in Chiayi, Taiwan, that was located in Chiayi County; the other three were in Chiayi City. Except for Dengyun Academy, which was rebuilt into Wenchang Elementary School, and Yufeng Academy within it, which was rebuilt into Zhen'an Temple to worship Baosheng Dadi, the other two have been completely destroyed. Dengyun Academy was first established in the 2nd year of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty (1832 AD), and was then called Dengyun Pavilion. It was not until the 15th year of Daoguang (1835 AD) that it was renamed Dengyun Academy, with a more formal academy structure. The name 'Dengyun' was chosen to commemorate General Wang Delu, who made significant contributions and jointly raised funds with local gentry to establish the academy, signifying the meaning of 'advancing rapidly in one's career'. However, seventy years later, Dengyun Academy was razed to the ground by two major earthquakes. It wasn't until more than fifty years later, in the 52nd year of the Republic of China (1963 AD), that the current Wenchang Elementary School was established on the site. Dengyun Academy fostered a flourishing literary atmosphere in Xingang and laid a profound educational foundation, nurturing countless talents over the years, with an educational spirit that continues to this day. Many even consider Dengyun Academy to be one of the important factors in Xingang's community building and the strengthening of its cohesion. Unfortunately, the only remaining artifact of Dengyun Academy to this day is the 'Donation Monument for the Construction of Dengyun Academy' erected in the 15th year of Daoguang, which was originally from that time.
