Although the academy has undergone several relocations and renovations, it has maintained its original layout of lecture halls, sacrificial temples, and dormitories, fully showcasing the spatial characteristics of traditional academies. It is a historical monument of Pingtung's long history and the only academy building within Pingtung County. Pingtung Academy was first built in the present-day Zhongshan Park, featuring 36 dormitories. The front hall served as a lecture hall, while the rear hall enshrined the God of Literature Wenchang Dijun, Chengzi, and Zhouzi. In 1895 (21st year of Guangxu reign, Qing Dynasty), Pingtung Academy was converted into a Confucian Temple, with Confucius as the main deity, accompanied by the Four Sages: Mencius, Yanzi, Zisi, and Zengzi, as well as the Five Great Neo-Confucian scholars: Zhou Dunyi, Zhu Xi, Cheng Yi, Cheng Hao, and Zhang Zai. However, due to a lack of funds for repairs, the Confucian Temple gradually fell into disrepair. In 1937, the Japanese rulers of Taiwan planned to relocate the Confucian Temple. However, at the urging of Japanese scholars to preserve it, the temple was dismantled and moved to its current location on Shengli Road, following its original appearance. After the relocation, for a long period, the Confucian Temple again appeared dilapidated due to a lack of active maintenance.
