The Old Pingtung Bridge contributed greatly to the transportation between Kaohsiung and Pingtung. However, due to factors such as riverbed subsidence, damage from typhoons, and reaching its service life, the bridge piers became exposed and gradually became unusable. The government then planned to build a new bridge to replace it. After the new bridge opened in 1987, the Old Pingtung Bridge retired from service and was designated as a Grade II National Historic Site in 1997. The Old Pingtung Bridge was designed and supervised by Japanese designer Toyoji Iida. The bridge arches are dark gray, circular steel structures with 24 piers. The piers are constructed from a mixture of bricks, stones, and granite. Construction at the time relied almost entirely on manual labor, and the wide and rapid currents of the Gaoping River added to the construction difficulties. After eight years, the railway bridge was finally opened for traffic. Today, looking at this old bridge from afar, its beauty remains, and its grandeur is as it was, evoking a sense of admiration for the hard work of our predecessors. Although the Old Pingtung Bridge, still spanning the Gaoping River, has been retired for many years, its historical contribution to driving the economic development and convenience of life in the Kaohsiung-Pingtung region cannot be erased.
