The Xin Dong Sugar Factory was initially built in the 1930s during the Japanese colonial era, funded by private investment. Due to favorable sugarcane cultivation conditions in the area, its brown sugar production once ranked among the top in Taiwan. However, due to changes in Taiwan's economic structure, the factory closed in 1991. After years of vacancy, under the guidance of the Taitung County Government, the sugar factory space was actively transformed into the "Xin Dong Sugar Factory Cultural Park."
