The Amis Folk Center was completed in November 1995, based on the hand-drawn plans of Sensengawa Suketaro, a Japanese architectural educator during the Japanese colonial era. It is built in imitation of the shaman's residence in the Tai Pang community of Hualien County. The wooden carvings on the beams and pillars are unique totems of the Amis people of the Tai Pang branch. The Amis are the main ethnic group in Chenggong Township, having moved here and formed settlements as early as the Qing Dynasty. The old name for Chenggong Township, "Malao," originates from the Amis language.
